The Imperial War Museum also has branches at four other locations in England, two of which are in London.
The Imperial War Museum was established in 1917 during the First World War, and seeks to provide for, and to encourage, the study and understanding of the history of modern war. It covers conflicts, especially those involving Britain and the Commonwealth, from the First World War to the present day. The main museum is located on Lamberth Road, London. The Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms are in Whithall, the historic ship HMS Belfast is moored in the Pool of London, and outside of London is the Imperial War Museum Duxford near Cambridge and Imperial War Museum North in Trafford.
The museum's collections of almost 11 million items include archives of personal and official documents, photographs, film and video material and oral recordings. There is also a an extensive library, a large art collection, and examples of military vehicles, aircraft, equipment and other artifacts.
The collections are displayed on five levels in the Lambert Road site. The museum is open 7 days a week from 10:00 until 18:00. Entry is free, but there is a charge for temporary exhibitions.
