Ballet performances at the Royal Opera House, Sadlers Wells and the London Coliseum tend to be of very high standard.
The largest of the three major ballet companies in Great Britain is The Royal Ballet, internationally renowned for classical ballet, and based in purpose built facilities at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. The Royal Ballet was founded in 1931 and employs approximately 100 dancers. The official associated school of the Royal Ballet is the Royal Ballet School and it also has a sister company, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, which is independently run.
The English National Ballet was founded in 1950 and employs around 67 dancers. The company's cornerstone is classical ballet, but it also commissions and acquires new pieces in order to develop and maintain an original and popular repertoire. The English National Ballet regularly performs at the Coliseum and the Royal Albert Hall in London, but also at many other major theatres in the UK and abroad.
Sadler's Wells Theatre is the name of six theatres that have been built since 1683 at a site on Rosebery Avenue in Islington, London. The present day theatre seats 1,500 and specialises in dance, ranging from ballet to hip hop, contemporary dance to flamenco.
