London Pubs and Bars

London is home to over 4,100 pubs and thousands of bars too. Those located in the center, and in London's West End, tend to be the most expensive.

When you walk around London, you will see pubs everywhere. Most of them are pretty ordinary, where you can get in, have a beer or something ells to drink, and a light meal, if that is what you want. Classier bars and pubs tend to be more expensive, however, the cost of alcohol drops significantly the further away you get from the center, although West End is an exception, with prices much the same as in the center.

It is hard to say which pub in London is the oldest, but it is easy to find contenders for the title. Many pubs were destroyed in the Great Fire of London and most of them rebuild on sites that are claimed to have been working pubs since the 13th century. Ye Olde Chesire Cheese in Fleet Street is on the site of an old monastery and its cellar dates back to the 13th century.

Many pubs have their own history and can be interesting to visit for that reason alone. The Spaniard's Inn in Hampstead is where both John Keats and Charles Dickens drank. Among other pubs worth visiting are: Founder's Arms on Hopton Street, South Bank; The Ship, Jews Row, near Wandsworth Bridge; The Grapes, Narrow Street, Limehouse; and the Horniman, Hays Galleria, near London Bridge.

If you are more into wine, try Davys wine bars with over thirty bars in the center of London. The company was established in 1870 and import wines. Other big names in wine include the Michelen-starred Cellar Gascon and Vinoteca, both in Smithfield. If you like cocktails, most bars offer a short cocktail menu. However, if you want to find a cocktail expert, try The International on St Martin's Lane, The Lab on Old Compton Street or Trailer Happiness on Portobello Road.
