Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest continuously occupied castle in the world, is located 36 km (20 mi) west of central London.

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and together with Buckingham Palace in London and Holyrood Palace in Edingburgh it is one of the principal official residences of the British monarch. Its rich history spans almost 1000 years. The Castle covers an area of about 5 hectares (13 acres) and its floor area is approximately 44,965 sq. meters (484,000 sq. ft).

The highly visible landmark of the castle, the Round Tower, is in reality far from cylindrical, its shape being dictated by the by the irregular, bet seemingly round, man made hill on which it sits. The castle's layout dates back to the medieval fortifications. The Round Tower divides the castle into two distinct sections known as wards. The Lower ward is home to St George's Chapel, while the Upper Ward contains the private Royal Apartments and the more formal state rooms, which includes St. George's Hall, a vast room which has a ceiling decorated with the coats of arms of past and present members of the Order of the Garter.

Visitors can walk around the State Apartments, extensive suites of rooms at the heart of the working place. From October to March visitors can also see the Semi State rooms, which are some of the most splendid interiors in the castle. They are furnished with treasures from the Royal Collection including paintings by Holbein, Rubens, Van Dyck and Lawrence, fine tapestries and porcelain, sculptures and armour.

Within the Castle complex there are many additional attractions, including the Drawings Gallery, Queen Mary's doll's house, probably the most famous doll's house in the world, and the fourteenth-century St. George's Chapel, the burial place of ten sovereigns and setting for many Royal weddings.

Windsor is 36 km (20 mi) west of central London. If you go by car, take exit 6 on the M4 motorway. There are numerous car parks in town. Trains leave from Waterloo Station to Winsor.  From March to October the opening time is 10:00 a.m to 5:30 p.m. (last entry at 4:00 pm). From November to February the castle is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (last entry at 3:00 pm).
