Windsor is located 34 km (21 mi) west of London. It is immediately south of the River Thames, which forms the boundary with its twin town, Eton. In Windsor and Eton there are two railway stations. Both stations are within walking distance of each other and Windsor Castle. By train there are two routes if you are coming from London. The choice of which route to use probably comes down to how far from either Waterloo or Paddington stations you are staying. From Waterloo there are two trains departing per hour, and the trip takes about one hour. From Paddington take any train to Slough and change here for a connecting rail service to Windsor & Eton Central.
Windsor is best known for being the location of Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world and still an official royal residence. Its rich history spans almost 1000 years. The Castle covers an area of about 5 hectares (13 acres) contains magnificent State Apartments, furnished with some of the finest works of art from the royal collection, St George's Chapel, the burial place of 10 monarchs, and Queen Mary's Dolls House, a masterpiece in miniature.
Among other things to see or visit in Windsor are: The Changing of the Guard, the guards are stationed at Victoria Barraks and march up to and from the Castle accompanied by the guards band; Guildhall, located on High Street and famous or its pillars; Windsor Parish Church, next to Guildhall; and Legoland Windsor, built on the site of the former Windsor Safari Park.
As a result of the royal residence Windsor has facilities usually only found in larger towns, like two railway stations, a theater, several substantial hotels, and many restaurants. Regular return riverboat cruises operate daily from February to November from the Promenade, Barry Avenue, and include 40 minutes and 2 hours trips providing unique views of the Castle.
Windsor's twin town, Eton, is a smaller town, dominated by Eton College, the ancient private school which educates many of England's establishment. Eton College is worth a visit and you should see School Yard, the College Chapel and walk around the extensive playing fields some of which are adjacent to the River Thames. It will take you no more than 15 minutes to walk from Eton College Chapel to Windsor Castle.
